Community Shred Day

Community Shred Day turned out to be quite handy for us. We had a giant box of paperwork that was taking hours to get through piece by piece. They disposed of it in ten seconds for $5. The finely-ground paper waste is pulped and recycled as cardboard and other paper products, and the $5 goes to help the Crime Stoppers organization.

There will be some other Shred Day events in the future. You can find out about them by visiting the Crime Stoppers site.

Atrocious Apostrophe Crime

This is in one of the strip malls up in Castleton. How did no one catch this? How many people worked on that sign before it went up, and no one realized? What's sad is that they got it right on the 3 signs inside the shop, but wrong on the biggest one.

So we're either on the verge of a major blizzard, or we're going to get an inch or two. No one seems to be able to decide. But either way, send us a photo of your favorite winter scene tomorrow, and we'll put them up here.

Do You Know These People?

Local photographer Chatree Campiranon took this picture at the Colts/Chiefs game over the weekend. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get the name of the couple in the picture. If you know these people (or *you* are these people) email Chatree at 'chatreez at gmail dot com'. He will print and mat an 8x10 of this picture for the couple if they can be identified.

IndyScribe Holiday Photo Contest

Merry Friggin' Xmas!If you send us a digital photo of your favorite greater Indianapolis area holiday display (christmas lights, a nativity scene, menorrah, your own tree, funny yard displays, etc.), we'll post the best pictures here on this page. Then we'll pick our favorite image (with coaching from people commenting) and send the photographer an IndyScribe t-shirt, as seen in our store, unless we design a cooler shirt before then. Sound interesting?

Here be the rulez:

1) Must be a display from somewhere in the greater Indianapolis area -- you need to provide the address or at least the street or neighborhood where the display is located.

2) Include your name or at least the name you want us to display on your submission.

3) Must be a picture you took and not something ripped off from the Indy Star. Don't send us copyright-infringing stuff.

4) Photos should be at least 480 x 360 pixels, so we can see the cool stuff.

5) If you kidnap the baby Jebus and send us the hostage photos, we are not responsible. We might post the pictures, but we won't post bail or take the fall. So don't break the law! (or at least don't get caught.)

6) You know us: we're not exactly sentimental, so we're probably going to vote for funny, oddball or strange pictures. Photos of ginormous light displays are especially welcome; show us IPALCO's favorite customers.

7) Contest ends on December 21st, when we'll announce the winner.

And, hey, if you get a chance to pass this contest along to other blogs, could you? That would be awesome. Happy Holidays! I'm off to find some spiked eggnog.

Looks like Marsh's decision to not develop the property at 54th and College (which we mentioned here last week) has struck a nerve with some people.

Sometimes a building style is so identified with its original business that it's hard to shake the association, even when the business is long gone. Here's our photo gallery of bad building conversions around Indianapolis. Let us know about the ones you've spotted around town...

Fake S.W.A.T. Van and Other Weird Stuff I See Driving To Work

Tonka Truck HummerI drive north on college from downtown everyday on the way to work on the north side. And every day I pass this cool fake S.W.A.T. van (which appears to be an old delivery van repainted) that's usually parked on the street near the intersection of 49th Street and College Avenue. And everyday, I think, "That's cool. I wish I could drive around in a fake S.W.A.T. van."

Dangerous Intersections

As part of their program to promote safer driving, State Farm Insurance compiled a list of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Indiana, using data determined by the number of crashes at various intersections, how many of those crashes involved injury and the severity of those crashes.

Eight of these dangerous intersections are in or around metropolitan Indianapolis, so we daredevils here at IndyScribe, along with co-workers and friends, decided it would be fun to pick one local dangerous intersection per week to photograph on our lunch break.
