black velvet van

Walking into work the other morning, I saw the front end of what looked to be a "fuzzy" van parked in the lot outside our building. As I circled around it, I noticed a Dark Side of the Moon logo on the side of the van. From a few feet back, the whole thing could have been mistaken for a black velvet painting on wheels.

Too good to pass up, I pulled out my camera to get a good shot of the artwork. As I was getting ready to snap my second shot, a friendly voice behind me said, "what do you think?" Henry Pelc had just caught me in the act of checking out his ride.

Local horror host legend, Sammy Terry, returns to Channel 4 once again! Sautrday, October 29th at midnight, he will be hosting Sammy Terry's Scary Tales with an episode called "The Grave of Baby Lester". Evidently, he'll be visiting the ever popular Stepp Cemetery in Morgan Monroe State Forest, in search of the grave of 'Baby Lester' and The Lady In Black who visits the grave. Anyone who is not familiar with this tale can most likely find it in any "Haunted Hoosier Heartland" style book.

He'll be back again on November 5th (same bat-time) with "The Acton Miracle". According to WB4s website, we already missed the October 23rd episode "The Tale of Hampton West". This is a pretty cool twist in the UNlife of this notorious ghoul. Sammy seems to have taken to looking into some of the spoookier Hoosier legends rather than just cutting up between commercial breaks for B-movies. So far, only the three episodes exist and sources are unclear if there will be more.

And by "sources" I mean "whatever I can find on the internet".

IndyScribe blogger Steph Mineart is on the cover of Nuvo this week talking about her photo collection of Big Things in and around Indianapolis. The article chronicles some her adventures while taking pictures of giant animals, furniture, people, and things (my favorite is the story of the sundial at the nudist colony). So go out, get a copy of Nuvo. Or read the article at Nuvo.

Book Review: Indiana Curiosities

Indiana Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities, and Other Offbeat Stuff, by local media celebrity Dick Wolfsie. You'll enjoy this book even if you don't live in Indiana -- and you'll definitely enjoy it if you do. Packed with the odd and unusual, this book was filled with surprises even for me, and I've lived in Indiana for almost 20 years. Strange things you'll see along the road, folks who collect or build weird stuff, bizarre legends and history... Dick Wolfsie explains them all with both wit and respect, and turns in a first-rate book that you should have with you on any daytrip you take around the Hoosier state.

So far, we here at IndyScribe have had two close encounters with Rupert Boneham, beloved star of Survivor: Pearl Islands and Survivor: All-Stars. The first was at P. F. Changs Restaurant at Keystone at the Crossing. Rupert came in and ate at the bar with friends, prior to the season finale of Survivor: Pearl Islands, and we were able to spot him. Later we saw him again, this time with an entourage (his, not ours) outside Shalimar Indian Restaurant at 1043 Broad Ripple Ave. The second sighting was after he had been awarded a million dollars as America's favorite Survivor during the Survivor: All-Stars finale. On neither occasion was he wearing tie-dyed clothes. Stay tuned to IndyScribe for all of your Rupert Boneham news.
