James Dean Museum Closes

Ganked from Yahoo's AP feed no less...

GAS CITY, Ind. - The museum chronicling the short life of James Dean has closed after struggling financially since its opening in 2004.

David Loehr, owner of the James Dean Gallery, announced in December that he planned to close the museum, but an outpouring of contributions led him to give it another try.

It ultimately shut down at the end of February, though, and Loehr has packed up and placed the memorabilia in storage.

David Loehr is also the man behind the Rockabilly Rebel Week-Ender (a national event spanning fourteen years) and is usually involved in Fairmount's James Dean Days.

You gave it a good go, Dave! Good luck with your future projects.

What is this south side you speak of?

As Vanessa pointed out in the comments on Jen's Grocery Store Roundup -- we are lacking in the south side coverage. We admit it -- we're lame. I live downtown, and everyone else lives sorta north-ish, like Meridian Kessler/Broadripple/Monon, with Jim holding down the fort up in Fishers.

Mike's a regular in the Fountain Square area. I have occasionally traveled to the Greenwood Park mall, and have seen the inside of both of the goodwill stores on the southside (great place to pick up board games) but as far as we're concerned, Indy's south side is the "here there be dragons" section of the map.

So help us out -- what's fun to do on the southside?

Set in Indiana: Lonesome Jim

I happened to catch the movie trailer for for the independent film Lonesome Jim on Apple:

Jim (Casey Affleck) begrudgingly returns to his hometown in rural Indiana after failing to make it on his own in New York. He soon remembers why he left: a doting but overbearing mother (Mary Kay Place), a distant father (Seymour Cassel), and a depressed older brother (Kevin Corrigan) whose “accidents” seem suspect at best.

Internet Movie Database has more, including some reviews from folks who saw the film at festivals.

Puck's

There once was a chef named Puck,
….eh, too easy.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t been to the Indianapolis Museum of Art since last year’s massive renovation, although it’s close to my house and the makeover looks stunning from 38th Street. Last week, we finally made it through the front door—not to see the exhibits, but to eat at Puck’s, the latest restaurant by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. The choice of Indianapolis seems like an odd one, as most of his other high-end establishments are planted in New York or LA territory. According to Wikipedia, Puck did a former stint in Indy as the chef of La Tour, where perhaps he developed a fondness for the place. Whatever the reason, I'm glad to have another unique and creative restaurant in town.

Where Do You Want to Go to Lunch?

At least twice a week, my office mates and I stand around with dumb, hungry looks in our eyes and try to figure out where to go for lunch. Our preferences lean toward cheap, close (to our building at 96th and College), and fish-etarian friendly (that's vegetarian fish).

Stakeout on Millennium Drive

I hate throwing in the towel on books. I feel guilty if I can't get through one, and I will struggle to the end of even the most difficult stuff. And I wanted to like Stakeout on Millennium Drive; I really did. It is, after all, a book set in Indianapolis, by a native writer, Ian Woollen. We just don't have enough of those, so I was hoping to write a glowing review of a "must read" book. He even sent the book to IndyScribe so we could review it. It's a murder mystery, and I love those.

Eightball Grifter at The Melody Inn

So you're looking for some live music in town and you just don't know where the heck to go. Ok, maybe you're not, but for the sake of this post, let's pretend that you are. By no means am I a club hound, bar hopper or even much of a scenester anymore, but I've spent my time in some of the more infamous juke joints this town has to offer back when I did my music journalism thing. So if you will, allow me to blather my perspective on Indianapolis music clubs.
