IndyGo gets two new diesel hybrid buses

IndyGo is adding two new diesel hybrid buses to their fleet on the first of February. This is in addition to the 5 they put into service back in August '03. Counting hybrid buses in our mass-transit strategy puts Indy into an elite club of only 18 cities in the US with this technology.
So, are these the same thing as the bio-diesel buses I have seen? The exhaust fumes from the bio-diesel buses smell like french fries.

Biodiesel is actually a type of diesel fuel made from soybeans. A blend of biodiesel and traditional diesel is available in our area -- see http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiesel/retailfuelingsites/showstate.asp?st=IN -- and IndyGo uses it: http://www.indianasoybeanboard.com/IndianaFleetUsingBiodiesel.html

These two buses are a combination of electric and regular diesel. What's cool is that they're also produced by three companies here in Indianapolis (GM Allison assembles them, Cummins builds the engines, and Remy International makes the batteries). Interestingly, we've been building these buses here for other cities, but this is the first time our city has any. They aren't as fuel-efficient as originally projected, but that's without factoring the "real cost" of less pollution.
