Even More Upcoming Things in Indy

Normally I'd just pass this sort of thing along in an e-mail to the rest of the IndyScribers. But what the heck. Here's a random list of upcoming events in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas...

Popcorn Fest
September 30th - October 2nd

Brazil / Clay County
Free - Fun for the family

How can you not be excited about this? Orville may be long gone, but his legacy lives on! But the fest is not just about gourmet popcorn, there will aslo be a kick ball tournament, laser light show and an Orville look-alike contest. Plus... FREE POPCORN!

The Riley Festival
October 6-9th

Greenfield
Free - Fun for the family

This one is close to my... heart... seeing as I grew up in Greenfield and attended the festival almost every year that I lived in the town. What can I say? It was a small town and there wasn't much to do for a disaffected teen with little gas money?

In any case, Greenfield has grown and so has the festival. The downtown streets are blocked off, and the town is taken over by craft vendors, live music, dancing, an art show in the court house, and there will be plenty of food on hand. You can also check out the historic houses of Main Street and the many antique shos. All in the name of Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley.

The Billy Nayer Show
Friday October 7th

Radio Radio
1119 East Prospect
Indianapolis
10pm / $5 / 21 and over

Here's what the marketing copy has to say about The Billy Nayer Show:
Explaining The Billy Nayer Show is like the Supreme Court trying to define pornography: You can’t describe it, but you know it when you see it. Their specialty is a dark and sometimes cryptic sarcasm that encases a surprising core belief in the power of love. BNS is a band infused by an entirely unique, internal mythology outside and beyond any trends.

Hardcore Hope
A benefit show for Alexis Frisinger (Spahr) in her fight against breast cancer
Sunday November 13th

Birdys Nightclub
71st & Keystone
Indianapolis
7pm / $6 / 21 and over

A group of friends have banded together to help Alexis as she fights breast cancer. Five hardcore/punk/industrial bands are donating their time to entertain and rock community vendors will be on hand, selling their wares. In addition, there will be door prizes and raffles, with money going to Alexis to help with her mounting medical bills.

To quote the groups website...
CANCER SUCKS and it costs A LOT of money to treat. Proceeds from the door & raffles as well as a portion of the vending profits will go directly to Alexis and her family to help offset the cost of breast cancer treatment. FUCK CANCER!

Yes kids. Fuck cancer, indeed.

Also, a very good amateur production of "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean". Where else to see a play exploring psychological misfunction and gender roles than in the basement of a Christian church in Beech Grove !

Performances: October 7, 8, 9
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 2:30 p.m.
Call for reservations: 317-767-2774
Tickets are $10, Students/Seniors $8

This show revolves around the 20-year anniversary of the Disciples of James Dean, a fan club formed by a group of love-struck teens in 1955, when Dean's "Giant" was filmed in a nearby town. The play jumps between 1955 and 1975 as six women revisit their past and their assumptions about themselves and one another. Starting with the combination of cozy reminiscence and prickly unfamiliarity that are part of any reunion, the play then reveals a series of long-held secrets. The result is an explosive work that examines the curiously tenacious ability of human beings to deceive themselves.
