Topic: Indianapolis Living

Posted: Sun, Feb 26, 2006

We've talked about this before but now it is about to happen, much of Indianapolis is going to be smoke free starting March 1st. Below is the list of places where smoking is no longer allowed:

  • Elevators, health care facilities, laundromats and licensed child care and adult day care facilities.
  • Restrooms, lobbies, reception areas, hallways and other common-use areas.
  • Polling places, shopping malls and sports arenas.
  • Lobbies, hallways and enclosed areas in common areas in apartment buildings, condominiums, trailer parks, retirement facilities, nursing homes and other multiple-unit residential facilities.
  • Public transportation facilities, including, but not limited to, buses and taxicabs and ticket, boarding and waiting areas of public transit depots.

Smoke Free Indy has been doing a great job of following this issue, check them out.

It's too bad that this ban doesn't extend to "any bar or tavern that does not allow customers under 18 years of age to enter." Does that mean that if I go to see a band at the Vogue I still have to smell like an ashtray? I also see they exempted bowling alleys. I think I'll just let that one lie there so we can all ponder it. Bowling alleys. Huh.

Are you sure bowling alleys are exempted? I got an email the other day of a list of local alleys that are going smoke-free; I'll have to dig it out and see whether that was voluntary or mandatory.

Yes, bowling alleys are as smoky as ever. Check out the ordinance. The bit about bowling alleys is In Sec. 616-204(a)(8).

You will most likely still smell like an ashtray at The Vogue. However, if you go to Radio Radio, which has been smoke free for several years now, you will not.

Couple thoughts as I sit here gaggin on my smokey clothes from the bar I just came from -

1. Several months ago the Libertarians has a chance to make a big splash by coming out against the idiotic new Colts stadium. Instead they focused all their energy on that terribly disadvantaged sector, restaurant owners faced with smoking bans. The Libs blew it and will forever be irrelevant.

B. The whole reason behind the smoking ban is that employers don't have a right to subject their employees to unsafe working conditions. We have mine safety rules, hazmat rules, etc, this is no different. OMG, hospitals make surgeons wear gloves ! Airports are forced to make their tarmac people wear ear protection !

Cigarettes would be illegal if the gummint didn't need the money. They're more harmful than pot.
