Form30

Topic: Music

Friday was a warm night, the moon was bright and full - only occassionally obscured by clouds. Outside Radio Radio, I chatted with David A., the braided and fanged bass player for Form30. My pal Leigh had appeared from within the club, giving me a friendly hug. It was good to see these two, as it had been a while. DJ Coppter Top joined us outside, leaving the beat behind in the club.

"Who's spinning?", David asked Copper Top.

"I am", she replied, grinning.

Form30 has been around since 1993 and are slowly losing the "formerly Nimbus" moniker. The band is the brainchild of Jason Milner, a tall, brownhaired and unassuming rock star. Over the years, Jason and his brother have honed the electronic driven alterna-rock that dominates the bands sound. As Nimbus, the groups line-up evolved. And as Form30, the line-up is solidified in Milner, David A. and the multi-faceted Jamie Vitro.

So there we were once again, inside Radio Radio, listening to Indys only true industrial rock hybird. What does that mean? Think Nine Inch Nails. Think Orgy. Think Stabbing Westward. Think... well - there just aren't too many of these sort of bands in the mainstream.

And Form30 has moved beyond the layer and build dance floor epics that made up the portfolio of the band as Nimbus. New songs were the meat of their set, hyping their new EP, Ignited. The new material is overwhemlingly more pop than industrial and the electronics take more of a back seat to rock as the group becomes a band and a bit less a one man show.

And it is good.

The new sound is more polished, and feels more "complete", which is the only word that comes to mind. Compelling is another word. Heck, you can listen for yourself over at Form30's website on MySpace.com. Even better was that the band threw in a cover of Placebo's Every You Every Me. The last time I heard a local band do a Placebo cover, it was my own band, about five years ago. Heh.

Check out Form30 for something different in Indy.
